So a bit of an improvement over last time but not by much therefore, another quick update really.
Those words have been on her last couple of weeks of home life and I have finally started on her journey to school! Well, I say that but really it’s just her waking up, remembering she is leaving to start a new adventure and getting dressed. Also, her cat has decided to use the word worms to describe people he sees below them. I am hoping that is actually funny but I will see eventually.
I have no idea what it is over the past week but I’ve had the time to write but I just seem to procrastinate and not write. Maybe it’s all the free time, maybe it’s the freedom, maybe it’s something else but for now, I just need to focus on actually using that time productively and just writing.
Part of that procrastination has been thinking about July and wondering if I should start another story or rewrite another one but I keep circling back to actually wanting to get this story written. Get this draft done at least. I think it’s born out of the fact I have struggled to do just that. Life has been through a few changes as of late and over the last couple of years which I think has contributed to me struggling to write and complete stories. Now I am settled, maybe it means I will finish a draft. Or maybe it’s just a good intention that will go.
How’s your writing going? Better? Worse? Had thoughts about July? If anyone has any advice about sitting my butt down and writing and maybe even completing a draft of a story at least, I would appreciate it. Have fun and I hope all the words come to you.
Just going to be a quick update as I’ve written 285 words since my last. Not a lot but enough to push me on for this month, in theory.
The last 262 words that I wrote last month were between my FMC and her cat, as the two argued and revealed to one another that they are just as nervous as the other, going to an élite magic school as a dark practitioner and a very catty cat. That spurred me on to realised that the story was finally in a position to move onto the actual main part of the story, the school stuff.
So far this month, I have managed two paragraphs, 136 words. This is mostly down to me being lazy, hence the reblog yesterday. Knowing I am in a position to write the school stuff though feels good as I know I can just sit down and write. For the most part, it writes itself which is very reassuring as I chase my June word target of 5,000 words.
How is everyone else going? I just hope you are having more luck than me.

Could have had a lot more words but life has taken a bit of priority and I have written just 3 words in the last two days. Also, this story seems to have decided it’s needs to go as slow as possible for no clear reason (except perhaps world building).
My FMC hasn’t had the best time of it either. She discovered that the slave girl she had seen very briefly earlier had had the magical part of her soul taken from her. The girl survived, hollow but alive, until my FMC said the word soul to her. The girl then screamed, releasing the rest of the girl’s soul from her body and dying.
A talk between the FMC and her mum made her realise that her non-dad had taken it so he could become more powerful. In fact, this is how the family had remained so powerful and feared for so long and why they had the soul box she had discovered when with her grandparents. The next day, the FMC talked with her older brother who has told her to stay out of his way or he would harm her. The FMC then decided to leave the house to get out of the way and into the fresh air for a bit. She ended up in the library and has discovered a magical library for practitioners like her. She is currently reading there.
As mentioned before, this story seems to be taking its own time and I am not sure how to speed it up without seeming to just skip over large periods of time with just a sentence or two. It just feels disingenuous to the story despite knowing that a lot of stuff will eventually be condensed, combined or even got rid of altogether. If anyone can offer any advice on this, I would genuinely be grateful for it. It’s times like this that my planning/outlining method proves quite flawed.
Aim for this week is to try to kick-start my story again to get on with it and actually get onto the part that’s the basis for this, magic school. I will get there in the end but it’s frustrating to be in a bit of a rut. How are you doing? Got any advice to share about my dilemma or just in general? Don’t be afraid to comment below.

And practically all those words are about familiars because, yes, my FMC got her cat familiar. She has learnt that her oldest brother is all right when the mood takes him and that the crows and ravens she has seen hanging around in the tree in the garden over the years are actually her siblings familiars. She has also been told that dark magical practitioners are not limited to certain familiars.
I think that’s going to play a part in the finale of the story. I’ve had a few more thoughts about the finale and it’s effect on my FMC but I think I need to write and cement those thoughts and ideas before I commit to them. I just don’t want to end up going down the wrong path plus I have some concerns about being too cliché or making her Mary Sue-ish.
I have a 5,000 word target for this month so obviously, I am racing ahead of where I need to be at this point which is good I feel. It leaves me free to get this month’s word count then start building up any buffer I may need for later in the year, because life will impact on writing plus I haven’t finished a 50k November since 2012. I miss that target (and possibly my July Camp 25k target) with no buffer and I can say goodbye to my yearly word target. I am 5.2k words ahead but it never hurts to be ready. If I can write more than my target, I might as well do that and enjoy the feeling of having slack days with little or no consequence.
How’s your writing coming along? Continuing your Camp project, started something new or perhaps gone back to another project? Hope you are having fun whatever you are doing?

FMC is still on her shopping trip but that’s because getting her uniform equalled her finding out more about Halowin, how she got in and getting advice about extracurricular activities. Getting her lunch meanwhile has revealed another bad deed her family committed against the family owners of the diner but all of this has actually resulted in Hallie gaining 2 possible friends. Her return to the hotel gets her thinking about relationships between her and others and she concludes that she may find someone in the future who does actually love and care for her. Of course, this means her love interest (who has shown up briefly already) is about to have his full introduction.
It’s all good information but I have already concluded that this is going to be a pain to edit. I mean, I am on 21k words and the real story hasn’t fully started. Of course, that’s a consideration for later. Also, when I was last wrote an update, I said that the story took place in an AU, high fantasy location. Writing a bit more has revealed that no, it is firmly in this world. I am glad I realised this now as it means I can focus on the story again and have fewer concerns about this should I go back to editing this draft.
So whilst not a lot has really happened, information is being gathered and I have no doubt things will work out. How are you feeling in these last few days? Close to target or just writing for the story now? Will you continue with the story or are you putting it aside? Feel free to comment below.

This draft just keeps kicking up new information. The FMC’s mum is backing my FMC’s beliefs about being able to be so much better and is supportive of her going to an elite magic school, rather than the dark magic one the rest of the family goes to. The FMC has also proved to be a bit devious by using her place as the unwanted outcast to get money from her non-dad to do her school supply shopping and to stay in a hotel for a few days. The hotel is because her mum and non-dad are kicking all the kids out of the house for a few days to do a ritual that needs complete silence. I am trying to figure out how the shopping trip will go whilst relaying the same or similar information from the first draft.
In the last couple of days, I’ve realised that this story takes place not in our world but in another AU, high fantasy type world. It seems to be connected to other stories I have done in the past in a separate world that has been developing for some years now. So that’s thrown up some new considerations, like government, world set up, it’s connection to other place, etc. At the same time, it has allayed some of my concerns about timing within the story. I don’t have to stick to the calendar of our world and I can draw upon elements from the other stories. This should be interesting.
So here’s hoping that when I post next weekend, I will be able to display a winner banner at the top of the post. How’s your writing going? Good? Bad? Had any revelations? Good luck folks!

That’s including some words I have written today during the WordNerds Write In. This is just a quick update.
Nothing much to report apart from my FMC fighting with her mum about their situation and FMC’s frustration at her, contemplating the school offer and deciding to take it. That is literally all I’ve written but it has pushed me on and it’s nice characterisation.
Here’s hoping I will get much more written. In theory, I am on track for reaching 25,000 words by the end of this month so there’s that.
