I know I said these posts would become sporadic but I didn’t intend for it to happen so soon! It’s mostly been down to plain laziness with writing in general or me just forgetting about this completely. Starting to play Destiny also doesn’t help.

Not a great deal has happened really. My FMC’s housemates have been introduced (with one taking a particular dislike to her), she’s had her first Etiquette, Deportment and Elocution & Charms lessons and has had another run with the girl who took a dislike to my FMC first.  Majority of the words written were covering the lessons and introducing the teachers. Even so, I feel as though I am making progress and these things are going to help towards character development and the story.

Whilst I have been playing Destiny, I have had a few thoughts about the back story of the world, leading up to the start of the game. This has led me to wanting to attempt to write sci-fi again but using fan fiction to teach me how to write it whilst getting out the story that is in my mind. This is a strength of fan fiction I feel. (I discussed this a few years ago in this post).

So my NaNoWriMo project is changing ever so slightly from pure original fiction to original fiction and a fanfic. There’s a chance this may change obviously. It seems to be traditional that I at least have a wobble in the days and hours leading up to the start of a session. Writing two projects though also gives me a higher chance of winning. My only November win was when I was writing two different stories, though granted they were both original fiction.

Prep therefore for the next few days is continuing with the first project, playing, researching and making sure I read every Grimoire card that I get to help me write the Destiny idea. How’s your writing coming along? Are you doing NaNoWriMo? Having a wobble? Set on an idea? Maybe your planner knee-deep in research, a pantser with the vaguest of ideas or in the middle and are a plantser (half and half).

Let me know below and I will try to be a bit more consistent with these!

EDIT 26/10/16: Know that wobble I talked about? Yes, well, I think I am going to start writing the Destiny fan fiction now. I’m rebelling anyway so nothing has really changed there. Just thought I should say something now just in case I fail to another one of these updates between now and whenever.

NaNoWriMo: Preparing To Write A Novel In A Month.

If you need some advice on relating NaNoWriMo next month, have a read of this!

Holly Evans

NaNoWriMo – when a large collection of writers gather around the world to write a novel in a month!

When you put it like that, it sounds crazy and intimidating doesn’t it? An entire novel, in one month! Don’t fear, I’m here to help.

First things first, take a deep breath, you can do this.

Secondly, let’s think about this logically. Don’t think of it as one huge undertaking, it’s not an entire novel, it’s a series of chapters, a collection of 1667 word bites. That’s manageable right?

If you write 50 words per minute, you can get that chunk done in under 40 minutes! That completely do-able right? Say it louder! Yes Holly, that’s completely do-able!

Great, now you have to can-do attitude, we’ll have at look at some methods to help you achieve that goal.

This isn’t my first NaNoWriMo, I’ve actually forgotten how many I’ve done, I’ve…

Monthly #Writing Update: June 2016

I’m planning to enter next month. Are you?

Word Count: 5,487 words

Unless I write any more or do any more planning, I think I can call that my final word count for the month. It hasn’t been the easiest of months as noted in my other updates and, to be fair, it’s been 5,000 words of not much really.

The month started with my FMC getting up, dressed and going to the train station to start at Halowin, with some nervousness and apprehension. Her familiar revealed he is snobbish and possibly has a dark personality to match hers, after referring to her family as worms. Her step/non-dad meanwhile, after having it pointed out that everyone will know who she is before long, told her to keep her head down as he doesn’t want anyone connecting her to his cabal(a band of dark magic users). Naturally, my FMC plans to make herself known, for all the right reasons but obviously, that is asking for trouble. She has also discovered her grandfather’s work partner has a wife and twin sons, one of whom is her love interest. His brother met his when they boarded the train. An argument with another pupil has shown that my FMC has a strong sense of justice when she defended a disabled pupil as well as having an attitude to match.

When you compare that to other month’s, that’s a few hours of story time in a few thousand words. Very little but it does feel right for now. I haven’t written everyday this month and I have spent the last few days planning (unsuccessfully) for next month. It has made me realise though that taking a break and working on a different project for the next month might be what I, and the story, needs: the chance to go back to it with fresh eyes.

As for what I am going to write next month, that’s all up in the air really. As stated above, planning has been unsuccessful. Bitten by two plot bunnies, I tried planning and working one idea into something coherent whilst the other remains illusive as it pertains to another idea that still needs to time to develop I feel before I can really give it a go. Neither I feel is ready to be written or even attempting to and since I need a break from the current story, it left me facing a month of pantsing it. (To those unfamiliar with that term, “pantsing” means going into the month with no plan, no plot, no character, no nothing and just writing).

Me, myself and I also know that is a bad idea as even I need some sort of plan or plot to at least know which story points I need to be working towards to make sure the story is coherent and has a chance of even being bullet pointed later if need be for later reviewing. That might be why my mind today gave me the idea of working on a story that I have done before for NaNoWriMo (November 2012), done some reworking of before but wondering now if maybe I should do the overhaul for Camp next month. I suppose I should just wait for midnight tonight, open a new document and see what I write.

So how was the last month of writing for you? Good? Bad? Discovered something new? If you are entering Camp NaNoWriMo next month, are you a planner ready for the off or a pantser who is just going to sit and write? Perhaps you are like me and have to know certain beats of the story before starting. Let me know down below if you want. I don’t bite! Honest!

Compared to last week, very little in terms of real writing. It was mostly just my FMC waking up, discovering that my MMC is in trouble and starting physiotherapy. I have figured out some other bits though with the help of friends. It doesn’t figure out for my MMC to face criminal charges so I have figured out an alternative plan, that leads on to more story.

I swear this story is hiding so much from me. I knew it would be an ongoing, autobiographical affair (the FMC is a character who means a lot to me) but I didn’t expect this story going on and on. For this month, that’s good as it gives me something fairly easy to write with a very busy week coming up.

I have also been thinking about next month. I am fairly set with the story but I know from experience that writing outside of my normal genre doesn’t always work out well. Therefore, I am wondering whether I should have a back up idea. I do know what other ideas I could use because I was planning on doing some sort of rewrite of earlier NaNoWriMo projects. But I am wondering, would that be a good idea?

Any ideas? Thoughts? How have things been for you? Any plans for next month? Don’t be afraid to comment.

Yes, that is correct. Over 4,000 words this past week, admittedly including about 800 words of planning for Camp next month. I just won’t have the time to do any later this month so I am taking advantage of the time now to do it, along with the fact that Tetra Ninja is posting his Tom Clancy’s The Division walk-through on YouTube. That game is proving to be a big influence on the story. It also lets me tweak things as I realise that I have gone a bit off track.

In terms of actual writing, I wrote myself into more story than anticipated. I was just planning on doing the ending and the explanation to help me write the rogue part I was talking about last time. Instead, I wrote the characters arguing, a fight between the FMC and the big bad initially before evolving into a fight between her and a rabid MMC. That ended up taking a few days to do as I was struggling to block out the fight and work out how to injure her badly enough for the next bit of story. The Hulk movie from 2003 ended up helping as it made me realise that I needed to change her motivation somewhat in the battle. She was unwilling to fight him except to stop someone else getting hurt but I realised she had to be willing to do so and to hurt him badly too. Otherwise, the story would end on a downer with both characters dying.

Now the focus is on rebuilding the characters, their relationship and deciding whether to have him face criminal proceedings. My instinct says yes, everything else, no. We’ll see but I suspect that and some more Camp planning will be what I am doing for the rest of the week.

How did your week go? Close to target or struggling to get off the ground? Please do comment below.

Nothing much to tell. Most of what I have written is redrafting of some writing I did last Sunday on the WAY On The Go app which failed to send to my e-mail address once more. I am starting to wonder if it just does not work on Kindle. So it’s only been my characters finally becoming a couple that has happened.

On the other hand, I have done some thinking and it is mostly surrounding a potential new idea for Camp in April and maybe some rewriting or the continuing of writing of other past NaNoWriMo stories. Camp is the place to do rewrites I think, at least for the first few drafts when it’s major changes being done. Of course, this is just my opinion.

The first story under consideration is my November 2014 hotel story with the witch and the werewolf. The direction of the story differed from my original thinking and I think that was the story’s undoing. I would like to go back and rewrite that story, if only to follow the original story idea.

The other is my July 2015 story about the witch from the dark family background. The only reason I stopped writing it is because I needed a break I think, along with the Post-NaNo Blues. I may completely rewrite the story as certain aspects kept changing and I never fully ironed out. Since I’ve had a break and whilst I was writing the story that took place years later, I realised that there was character stuff that needed changing and completely redoing.

Another reason I been thinking about it is because I have bought an etiquette book, reproduced from the 1800’s, for general research as I’ve noticed a lot of my writing lately has required me to think about or research etiquette and deportment among other things for stories. Having a go to guide on hand hopefully will help, especially with my July 2015 idea.

If course I still have nearly two months to think about and decide, as well as the fact I still have the new idea to flesh out and consider. In the meanwhile, I do have my current writing to be doing. Hopefully it will be a little more successful this next week. How’s your writing going? What do you think of the idea that Camp is a good place for rewriting or continuing old stories? Are you thinking about Camp yet or am I thinking too far ahead? Do comment below.

#Writing Update

Sherlock WritingObviously, it is the last day of the month tomorrow but doing the update today as I have no idea if I will be bothered to do it then.

Word Count: 1,489 words

I think this is turning more and more into a very detailed character sketch of my FMC, a fictional biography I suppose. A lot more written compared to last week. It has been mostly my FMC talking about her exams and how it was part of making her who she is today. I suppose it all helps with world building and such and it may give me chance to show my MMC’s side of stuff yet. It’s not really much but it is fun still and I am enjoying writing it.

As I mentioned, it is the last day tomorrow but I hit my 5k target on the 17th of this month. I am now on 7,547 words so not too shabby. Of course, I think it will be necessary to have the slight buffer as the next couple of months are going to be manic due to life to say the least. With Valentine’s Day in February and Easter and Camp Prep at the end of March, I think it will be necessary just to keep pushing and take whatever bump up in words I can get.

How’s your writing going? Hit your target for this month or are you going hell for leather to finish? How do you see the next couple of months working out for you? Good luck to you all!
