Minimal written due to life so just going to be quick.

The main gist of what has happening in those thousand words or so that I have written is that my FMC came home to find her mother unable or unwilling to care for herself without permission from another person and has basically had to be the head of the household whilst also deciding she needed to investigate her family’s new cult and disrupt it to stop her step father from summoning Gods.

50k is definitely not going to happen this month but the rest of the words I need to be on par for the year, possible with a lot of work. My aim for now though is just to get writing again. Life has had to take priority recently.

How’s your writing going? Better than mine I hope! Any winners yet? Hope you are having fun.

Not a bad start to November considering how busy life has been as of late. Nearly forgot about doing this until I needed a way to procrastinate having hit a slight wall.

In basic, the month has started with some unexpected possible foreshadowing, musings about one of the characters and my FMC’s mother now being a gibbering wreck under her now cult leader husbands control. My FMC and her mum were then dumped at the dirty, unoccupied and trashed former family home and the rest of the family, now cult, going to live in their compound, aka field. My FMC has had to become the adult of the house as she tries to clean and make the house liveable whilst relying on a local church food bank to get food and basic living items for them thanks to her stepfather giving them no money to spend. She has also learnt what has happened in her absence.

As you might be able to tell, much of this has happened on the fly as I have written but it does fit for now and I want to keep going until I finish the draft at least. Word count wise, I figured out I need to write 12,800 words this month to be on target for the rest of the year. My current word count means I am ahead of where I need to be based on that target. This is partly because of how busy life is so have not written for a few days. I am happy though with my progress.

How’s your writing going this month? Ahead or chasing? Had any unexpected surprises? Keeping on track with your plan? Do comment below if you wish.

Monthly #Writing Update and #Pumpkins

Happy Halloween! I love this time Very much doubt I will be writing anything before midnight now so thought I would do my update. Going to be quick as I think I have covered everything in the rest of my updates through the month, sporadic as they have been.

Again, been writing on and off all month and never exceeding a 1,000 words on any given day. I think an element of being overwhelmed at the amount of description and introduction needed for different aspects of the story threw me off at the start of the month then general apathy for the rest of it. I am really enjoying this story but maybe the fact that there’s been more planning and thinking done than writing says something. It has helped shape the story, the characters and the world that the story takes place in though and made me think about questions I hadn’t considered before.

I am becoming very grateful to myself for allowing me to experiment with jumping around the story if I feel I am able to write a later scene now. It has helped so much with getting stuff written and done that it makes writing that much easier. As for linking up those scenes, that could be another issue all together.

I am really looking forward to doing this story in NaNoWriMo. With the energy, community and challenge of it, I think it could be really beneficial with getting more of this draft written. It’s a chance just to write without really thinking too hard and getting some feedback at least from other writers involved in the challenge.

Getting into Destiny has both hindered and helped this month. I’ve ended up writing a few words of Destiny fan fiction which I will be going back to and think I am going to use the 100 themes challenge to help. That move is inspired by one of my best friends who is doing something similar with a project they are working on. I think I will keep going with this, maybe. Destiny just lends itself to some fan fiction being written.

Plan for next month is obvious really: write! Write as much as I can, don’t go crazy with NaNoWriMo and life and have fun! Anyone NaNo-ing? New story or rebelling like me? Leave your comment below, happy Halloween again and watch these brilliant videos from The Royal Institution:

I know I said these posts would become sporadic but I didn’t intend for it to happen so soon! It’s mostly been down to plain laziness with writing in general or me just forgetting about this completely. Starting to play Destiny also doesn’t help.

Not a great deal has happened really. My FMC’s housemates have been introduced (with one taking a particular dislike to her), she’s had her first Etiquette, Deportment and Elocution & Charms lessons and has had another run with the girl who took a dislike to my FMC first.  Majority of the words written were covering the lessons and introducing the teachers. Even so, I feel as though I am making progress and these things are going to help towards character development and the story.

Whilst I have been playing Destiny, I have had a few thoughts about the back story of the world, leading up to the start of the game. This has led me to wanting to attempt to write sci-fi again but using fan fiction to teach me how to write it whilst getting out the story that is in my mind. This is a strength of fan fiction I feel. (I discussed this a few years ago in this post).

So my NaNoWriMo project is changing ever so slightly from pure original fiction to original fiction and a fanfic. There’s a chance this may change obviously. It seems to be traditional that I at least have a wobble in the days and hours leading up to the start of a session. Writing two projects though also gives me a higher chance of winning. My only November win was when I was writing two different stories, though granted they were both original fiction.

Prep therefore for the next few days is continuing with the first project, playing, researching and making sure I read every Grimoire card that I get to help me write the Destiny idea. How’s your writing coming along? Are you doing NaNoWriMo? Having a wobble? Set on an idea? Maybe your planner knee-deep in research, a pantser with the vaguest of ideas or in the middle and are a plantser (half and half).

Let me know below and I will try to be a bit more consistent with these!

EDIT 26/10/16: Know that wobble I talked about? Yes, well, I think I am going to start writing the Destiny fan fiction now. I’m rebelling anyway so nothing has really changed there. Just thought I should say something now just in case I fail to another one of these updates between now and whenever.

#Writing Update

After suffering from cold and dealing with rl stuff, I am actually proud of that total. It’s not perfect nor ideal but it’s better than none. Therefore, this update is going to be a short one as expected.

In terms of story, my FMC and her fellow first formers have just met their new house leader. Having received the cold shoulder from her fellows, my FMC is talking to said house leader, who is questioning her over her reluctance to try new food.

There is potential character growth seeds here but whether they grow or not, I don’t know. The conversation may well get ignored. Speaking of which, I have also been thinking about an idea that I am wondering if I could pull off with my FMC’s mother. It has potential for wider effects on characters and character relationships so I am treating it as a possibility.

In other news, I have joined NaNoWriMo once more but have resigned myself to the fact that 50,000 words is never going to happen. I learnt my lesson from last year that a November NaNo is never gonna be completed fully with everything else going on. I will be writing and logging word counts (staying with this story) instead and cheering everyone else on from the sidelines.

Plan for now though is to write, catch up and just get rid of this cold. A quick question though if you would be so kind to answer: years or forms? I keep flip-flopping and was wondering if anyone has any ideas. The story is set in an AU Britain where magic is known and out there but regular humans have a habit of turning a blind eye to it. Be grateful for any responses.

I am quite proud of that total despite not writing for 9 days and it cut some of my deficit.

Most of what I wrote was exposition stuff, description and explaining how the school works. It’s not exactly the most interesting but necessary. I also went off track too by writing a scene from later in the story and a scene that really belongs in a possible sequel. They explore a possible story line that I am still figuring out and don’t want to discuss at the moment as discussed in my last update. I have also been reconsidering certain characters and their portrayal and who they are really. That could be an interesting experience as the changes are things I have never attempted writing before.

This is only an early draft so what’s written now will get rewritten hopefully and some story lines, characters and ideas may get stripped out.

I have also spent the end of last month working on a suggestion from Draebox of having a second project to work on when I hit a block on the first. Currently, that project is looking like it could be my NaNoWriMo/November 2014 and very little progress has happened however I have had a breakthrough on it. The second project may change yet but we will see.

Overall, last month was quite successful and the exposition will help me later. Having a second project could help so what I discuss in these updates could vary. I will try not to make it confusing. Aims for this month? Get as much written as possible to delay any issues that will present themselves over the next two months due to life stuff. I will be incredibly busy so writing will fall to the wayside. It is inevitable but if I can get ahead now, that will help a lot. No plans to take part in NaNoWriMo fully but I will try to enter some words some days.

How was last month for you? Plans for this month? Entering NaNoWriMo in November. Don’t be afraid to comment below.

Holly Evans

nanowrimo prep preparing to write a novel in a month

NaNoWriMo – when a large collection of writers gather around the world to write a novel in a month!

When you put it like that, it sounds crazy and intimidating doesn’t it? An entire novel, in one month! Don’t fear, I’m here to help.

First things first, take a deep breath, you can do this.

Secondly, let’s think about this logically. Don’t think of it as one huge undertaking, it’s not an entire novel, it’s a series of chapters, a collection of 1667 word bites. That’s manageable right?

If you write 50 words per minute, you can get that chunk done in under 40 minutes! That completely do-able right? Say it louder! Yes Holly, that’s completely do-able!

Great, now you have to can-do attitude, we’ll have at look at some methods to help you achieve that goal.

This isn’t my first NaNoWriMo, I’ve actually forgotten how many I’ve done, I’ve…
