#CampNaNoWriMo July 2016: Day 3

Only thing that really happened yesterday, story wise, is my FMC has sat talking to the brother of the MMC, who has told her that there parents disapprove of the match between the MC’s before revealing he was gay to my FMC but he feels uncomfortable with that realisation. My FMC tried talking him round but it hasn’t worked too well. They returned inside and my FMC and MMC have sat down to talk because the MMC is trying to escape a very hands-y potential partner.

External to the story, all existing characters got named (hurrah!) and I have discovered what business the MMC’s parents run and that my FMC’s father is a priest.

Compared to last week, very little in terms of real writing. It was mostly just my FMC waking up, discovering that my MMC is in trouble and starting physiotherapy. I have figured out some other bits though with the help of friends. It doesn’t figure out for my MMC to face criminal charges so I have figured out an alternative plan, that leads on to more story.

I swear this story is hiding so much from me. I knew it would be an ongoing, autobiographical affair (the FMC is a character who means a lot to me) but I didn’t expect this story going on and on. For this month, that’s good as it gives me something fairly easy to write with a very busy week coming up.

I have also been thinking about next month. I am fairly set with the story but I know from experience that writing outside of my normal genre doesn’t always work out well. Therefore, I am wondering whether I should have a back up idea. I do know what other ideas I could use because I was planning on doing some sort of rewrite of earlier NaNoWriMo projects. But I am wondering, would that be a good idea?

Any ideas? Thoughts? How have things been for you? Any plans for next month? Don’t be afraid to comment.

Just under 2,000 of those words was in one day. In the story, still exposition, revealing the world, the most popular game for witches and a broomstick lesson but there are three things that have mainly dominated this week’s writing.

The first, looking back, is that my FMC is finding herself being questioned by others and questioning herself why she has chosen and begged for a place at a rival school to her family’s dark magic school. I’m not sure why she is doing that really as she knows why (wants to do something different to her family) but I can’t help feeling it is going to be important, especially after some rethinking and planning of the story and the character’s journey. It’s not a bad feeling. In fact, it is a very good feeling.

The second is the revelation of my MMC’s struggles in his classes. I haven’t really written much with him for a while, mostly because the school is split into boys and girls and I am having a go at using third person limited. The struggles revelation feels as if it is going to be vitally important. I am not sure why but again, it is a good feeling.

Ah, the wonders of pantsing and having an outline that is rather loose in my mind. Especially when that outline is limited to about one years worth in story time of plot. Who knows? It might become a little Malory Towers in its focus.

The third thing that has happened is that my FMC’s potential love interest has revealed that they are gender fluid. To anyone who has never heard of the term, it describes someone who doesn’t feel like their assigned gender all the time. This is different to being transsexual. In this case, the love interest is male. They will have periods of time where they feel male so act male but will also have times where they feel female so will act and be female for that time. I have known this since I started writing the story pretty much however I have been nervous about doing it as it is the first time I have written a character like this. How successful it is so far and will be, I don’t know. All I know is that this is right for the character and will cause conflict between them and their family as well as at school, as it is segregated between male and female with normal expectations of those genders in place and reinforced by lessons such as etiquette. I am looking forward to seeing how this goes.

I have already mentioned some rethinking and replanning has happened. This is resulting from a realisation that I needed to age the characters up so a rethink of the structure of the school and the education system in place in this world became necessary. It took me a while to figure it out yesterday at a write in, where I ended up voicing stuff out loud as well as sketching and drawing things in mid-air to help me visualise it. This is part of the value of having writing friends and going to write in’s and maybe writing groups too. You can say and do things with fewer or no strange looks whatsoever. This restructuring will definitely work better I feel and allow me a bit more room to move when writing character’s actions and dialogue. Perhaps it also explains why my FMC has become so much more introverted than normal.

Aside from all this with my Camp story, I have begun the task of doing some research and planning for November. I suspect my time may become limited so I am trying to get a little ahead to compensate. This research has included the North Pole and the Arctic Circle.

Plans for next week? Write my Camp story, research for November and trying to remember to post my wc’s on Twitter. I keep forgetting!

Okay, not the best. Yes I am still behind but I am struggling a bit to keep some rhythm when writing.

I also discovered that my MMC doesn’t like his current situation and wants to go back to his home in Norwegian Lapland. There’s tension between him and his dad and he is rather a rebellious person.

So not much happened yesterday but hopefully, with a full weekend ahead of me and no job hunting to do, I might catch my deficit up and be on target… Hopefully…

Camp NaNoWriMo: Day 1

2014 Participant Banner

Day 1 wasn’t entirely brilliant with just 665 words written but I blame that on having started writing and realising that I needed to do some re-jigging of my planning, setting and background information. Not least of all, characters remained unnamed until yesterday. For now, my MMC and his family have been named and a surname given to my FMC’s family. So still some work to do there and getting names sorted for my FMC (and the name of the town and island setting). I think that is going to be my first job this afternoon before I start writing again.

I struggled to get writing yesterday mainly because the first bit is meant to be the awkward first meeting between the FMC and MMC which sparks the events of the novel. The problems mentioned above naturally impacted on the writing, including the fact that the novel is set up in the Shetland Islands. I don’t know the Scottish education system as well as the English so required a bit of research to make sure I was on the right track. It might easily be a novel I will not revisit once this month is over but get certain things right the first time matters to me. Not least of all, it helps with getting things written initially and with editing at later stage in case I do go back to it.

Now I have got writing, hopefully things will be a little easier here on in.
