Monthly #Writing Update: April 2017 #CampNaNoWriMo

Word Count: 4,808

192 words off target but considering how busy I was last month, I don’t mind. This is also going to be a quick update as there is not much to really tell.

Most of it covered my FMC learning a new game. I am still messing with the idea and considering dropping it all together. I am not sure it adds anything to the world but it gave me words at least because of the amount of exposition. Giving up on the game led to me then getting stuck as I had no idea what to write next. I had run out of planning due to me not having thought that far ahead if I am being honest. I started this story with just a concept and planning up to a certain point.

The last week of Camp I was in Cardiff and managed to write a grand total of about 100 words. All of those words were written on the train home and came from me jumping ahead to something that happens later. I added more words on the last day of Camp as I tried to hit 5k but it just didn’t happen. Whether it was laziness, panic or something else, I don’t know. I just didn’t hit target.

This month then is just about keeping going, trying to figure out what to write next in this draft so I can be completing it by the end of the year, per my yearly goals. How is everything for you? Congratulations if you finished Camp and congratulations still if you even wrote a word!

What are everyone planning for this month? Same story or moving on? Any plans to enter July? Don’t be afraid to reply below.

Monthly #Writing Update

3278e-writerWord Count: 1,852 words

Monthly Word Count (so far): 9,728 words

I am aiming to hit 10k tonight before Camp starts tomorrow. I might have hit that target this weekend had my laptop not died on Friday and resurrected itself on Monday. No, I have no idea how it managed to do that either. All I do know is that it made me rethink my Camp idea.

Before my laptop failed on me, my MMC has been released from prison and has visited my FMC, explaining his part in the story and has announced he is going to help my FMC with her housing problem (she’s been evicted from her flat). It wasn’t much but it pushed the story on. It is a story I have enjoyed writing this month, even if it has been a bumpy ride of sorts with it. I know where that story needs to go and I will have to go back to it at some point. I just hope I actually do.

As for this week at least, I ended up having a wobble over my NaNoWriMo story whilst my laptop was down. I had planned something heavily inspired by Tom Clancy’s The Division, as I have previously discussed. Last week, I asked if I should have a second story due to writing outside of my genre once more, trying to learn my lesson from Camp July 2015. That second story also happened to be the magic school from the same Camp session. I had harboured thoughts of going back and rewriting it but I had no idea when.

Without any access to my files and struggling to write, I started to rethink my story. I started wondering how excited I truly am about The Division story. I do like the idea but that’s all it is I suspect: an idea that I need to work and hone more before I can truly write it. I know this sounds like the muse has left sort of problem and it is in a way. I also know though when to trust my instincts. This is one such occasion.

Of course this left me with no story for a short time as I wasn’t sure if I wanted to go back to my July 2015 story. Again, instinct kicked in and told me that I should go back so my Camp story is now a rewrite. It sometimes really pays to listen to your instinct.

I know I seem to be rambling about this but I think it’s important that I do write this down and share my experience, perhaps maybe help others if possible. I know it has helped me because I feel I am able to think about this with a lot more clarity that I had done.

How has your writing been going this week and this month? Entering Camp next month? Had any wobbles or do you know what you are doing for definite? Whatever your plans for April, good luck and happy writing!

#Writing Update

3278e-writerA bit late and just a quick one.

Word count: 1,172 words

Very little written but it was enough to get me going, especially as I have lowered my target for this month to 2,500. This is mainly because life is having to take priority and that will remain the case for the rest of the month at least.

The FMC has tried to get to the bottom of what has happened to the MMC. She has landed in a bit of bother for it but I think it might turn out to be the obligatory gone rogue story that most crime stories seem to need. I’ve not really ever written something like that before so it will be interesting. I have also skipped to the end of the story as the “go-rogue” thing just happened and I think I would need to plan it to make sure I get it right. The ending at least, is easier to write as I know what need and has to happen there.

I have also been considering April Camp NaNoWriMo again. This was prompted by a friend saying they are wanting to give it a go and would feel better doing so if I am also there for them to talk and take part against. I am now really tempted to do it. I would be writing anyway and you can change your word target to something less than 50k (or more if you are feeling ambitious). If I am going to be writing, I may as well take part and support my friend at that same time. Seems daft not to really.

How has your March started? Working on something new or continuing with an existing piece? Also, are my reasons for possibly participating in Camp good or bad? Feel free to comment below.

Not a big update because obviously not a lot has been written due to tiredness. I have broken the 6,000 word barrier so that’s good, right?

It’s still my FMC talking about the past but I am aiming to push on and have the story actually kick back in. I am tempted to go off track and just write little bits and pieces. It’s not a massive loss as far as I am concerned because this story was just something I started writing and couldn’t stop. As a set of character sketches, perhaps it’s not a bad thing for me to go and write something else with the characters then come back.

As well this week, my mind has played with a vague new idea that does need some development but might become my April Camp story or what I work on next month or some time in the future. It is vague as I said but I do think that there is something in it as it is also drawing upon an idea I had years ago but never used. I believe Russell T. Davies, in Doctor Who, The Writer’s Tale: The Final Chapter, describes it as “Characters In Search Of An Author.”

I guess time will tell about what I write and how the idea develops. Here’s hoping your writing has gone better than mine.

Camp NaNoWriMo Planning

Okay, first things first, I want to apologise for a lack of real activity on here. A mixture of different things, mostly revolving around job hunting, have prevented me from posting and writing as much as I would have liked. Please forgive me for that.

My July project for Camp NaNoWriMo is based on the successful musical Wicked, which in turn is based on the novel by Gregory Maguire. Image Source: GoodSearch

Hopefully, the writing side of things will improve as I have signed up (perhaps stupidly) for another Camp NaNoWriMo session. Most of the writing I have done since April has surrounded planning for this next session, inspired by the musical Wicked. I am sure people will know what it feels like when you get thinking about something. I got thinking about this next session not long after my rather dreadful April attempt, whether I was going to take part in the July session and about the fact that Wicked is currently touring around the UK.

Unable to afford to go and see the professional version, I started wondering about whether there was any amateur performances of Wicked in my area. A quick search online revealed that there were no licenses available for am-dram groups to perform it so it was not possible for groups to do the show. Naturally (maybe to a writer’s mind), I started thinking about writing a script based on Wicked that can be performed by local drama groups and so July’s  project was born.

Whilst working on the basic planning, I realised that I was in danger of replicating the back story to another character I have. I also realised that whilst playwriting books and Celtx do try to help you write plays, I don’t actually know how to format a play script. So until I figure that bit out, I will be writing it as a moving image/film script. Don’t be afraid to get in contact if you can give me any advice or help on the formatting of play scripts. I will appreciate any and all help anyone can give me!

This new project may or may not work but I figure it is something well worth a shot. Will it get performed? Will I even edit it after I have finished the script? I don’t know but I really want to try. I am also curious about who else is planning to do NaNo this month. Hopefully, for me at least, July will be better than April.

NaPoWriMo!

Not the novelling kind? Then how about a poetry challenge for April instead? Find out more here.

Hey everybody!
I decided to participate in NaPoWriMo this year! 🙂
Actually, I wanted to take on this challenge last year, but by the time I found out about it April was already begun.
So, I’m joining this year!

For the ones of you who, like me last year, are new to this, a short explanation.

NaPoWriMo, or National Poetry Writing Month, is an annual project in which participating poets attempt to write a poem a day for the month of April.

NaPoWriMo was founded in 2003, when poet Maureen Thorson decided to take up the challenge (modeled after NaNoWriMo, or National Novel Writing Month), and challenged other poets to join her. Since then, the number of participants has gotten larger every year, and many writers’ organizations, local, national and even international, organize NaPoWriMo activities.

30 poems in 30 days, I like a challenge! 🙂

If you want to join, check out this…

Yet again, I am failing to post.

Job hunting, rejections and other stuff have left me not inclined to post anything at the moment. I just want to apologise to people who are following me. I feel dreadful for not posting too much over the last week but with not very much to say, I’ve had little reason to write.

Hopefully posts will pick up soon as I have decided, at the moment, to do Camp NaNoWriMo in April. This might still yet change (there’s a few weeks of March still to go) but I will be aiming  to do daily word count posts as usual, even it is just to keep me going. I need something to do instead of job hunting constantly.

I have a basic idea of what I am going to write. It’s already changed slightly from what I had envisioned earlier this month but I feel what I have now has a bit more depth than the previous one so that might make it even better. Also gives me things to explore for word count.

So that’s why I haven’t been posting, apologies yet again for that, but hopefully things will improve.
